DAWN

GO BACK

Dawn Project

The Diocesan Area Wide Network (DAWN) is a data communications network connecting SDS and other Anglican organisations via business-grade broadband Internet.

SDS provides added value to data communications service by:

  • monitoring link availability and performance
  • providing network virus protection and filtering spam messages
  • providing Help Desk support during business hours
  • providing Voice over IP (VoIP)
  • providing equipment replacement and configuration services.

DAWN offers various broadband speeds to customers, with all communications links terminating at SDS?s corporate data centre. The result is more efficient communication within the diocese.

SDS is using DAWN as a platform from which to launch its future online business services to parishes.

Online registration and payment systems, a parish roll system and backup services (over the Internet) are just some of the future services that will be offered to parishes in the DAWN community.

Existing DAWN community

There are already more than 50 parishes and diocesan organisations in the DAWN community. They include:

  • SDS
  • Glebe Administration Board
  • Endowment of the See (EOS)
  • Anglican Media Sydney
  • Mothers? Union
  • KidzLink
  • Youthworks

and a growing number of parishes.

Most parishes and organisations in the DAWN community use our business-grade data communications service but some also subscribe to our VoIP service to reduce the ongoing cost of their telephone service.

Advantages of DAWN

There are many advantages to joining DAWN for parishes and diocesan organisations. By joining DAWN you will:

  • be a part of a managed network where links are monitored and Help Desk support is offered.
  • have the ability to connect multiple buildings on one site to a common data and telecommunications hub, lowering your ongoing costs.
  • receive virus and anti-spam protection at the network level.

Benefits of DAWN

Parishes and diocesan organisations in the DAWN community are connected to a managed, private network. This means data communications between DAWN users are sent internally. External communications, via the Internet, are protected by SDS?s virus and spam filtering software.

Parishes and diocesan organisations connected to DAWN can experience:

  • an increase in productivity by accessing the same data from linked locations.
  • recurrent cost savings by sharing communications facilities across different buildings on the same site.

Overview of broadband services

The communications industry abounds with unfamiliar acronyms and confusing service plans. We have tried to keep the following overview of our broadband service as simple as possible.

DAWN?s broadband connection supports both ADSL and ADSL2 services. Remember your connection speed is impacted by:

  • network loading on major trunk links
  • last mile congestion (when link(s) on your local exchange connection are oversubscribed)
  • Internet usage (peak periods are between 3-8pm ie after school).

Our broadband service providers have an uptime guarantee of 99.5%. They also guaranty line speeds at or above 75% of the advertised speed, 90% of the time. (For example, minimum line speed for a 512 kbps connection is 384 kbps.)

    Leveraging off infrastructure

Recurrent cost benefits can be achieved when different buildings on the same site share services.

In some cases, a parish?s infrastructure (like wiring and cabling) will need to be upgraded. SDS will work with parishes to devise a suitable payment plan for the cost of any new infrastructure.

    Payment

A simple six month contract is entered into between the customer and SDS. SDS invoices customers each month for its broadband and VoIP services.

Direct debit is our preferred method of payment because it avoids unnecessary administrative overheads.

    Want to know more?

SDS can arrange an initial site visit, scoping document and financial comparison to see if DAWN suits the needs of your parish or ogranisation.
